Biography

Jose Manuel Cuevas was born in Mexico City, Mexico, on November 26, 1987, to mother Monica, a teacher; and father Jose Manuel Cuevas, an Industrial Engineer for United Parcel Service . He has a younger brother, Esteban and a younger sister, Monica. His family is related to Mexican celebrities Tin Tan (Germán Valdés) and el Loco Valdés. Cuevas was raised Catholic.

During his childhood, Cuevas performed playing marimbas and singing in his Elementary school's choir. He also received voice coaching during middle-school.

While attending Instituto de Humanidades y Ciencias (INHUMYC) High School, he became heavily involved with theater and formed a band called Punto y Aparte. After graduating in 2006, he moved with his family to Coquitlam, B.C. to attend another year of high school at Dr. Charles Best Secondary School. Shortly after enrollment, Cuevas dropped out, pushed by his intense desire to do film. He left school after only three months and enrolled The Art Institute of Vancouver in 2007.

Career

Early Years

At age seventeen, Cuevas released demos with his band Punto y Aparte, standing out "Bajo Tierra", their most popular song. Shortly before moving to Canada, Cuevas recorded his first EP Mi Tierra under the name of Manuel Cuevas.

While attending the Art Institute of Vancouver in 2007, Cuevas recorded a cover of Depeche Mode's "The Policy of Truth" for a short film, getting the attention of talent hunters in his hometown. A deal with Mexican label Aedon Records quickly followed, leading Cuevas into the studio with producer/writer Nurivan Reyes.

Career beginnings, Real (2008)

Cuevas traveled to Mexico City in December, 2007 to record his first album. Aedon Records decided to call him Mann as his stage name. He was the first international artist to be part of their record label.

Real, Mann's debut studio album, was released in March 2008. The album saw Mann in collaboration with Nurivan Reyes, and drummer Rivelino Quiroz. The album received positive reviews after its debut on Nationwide Radio Red FM radio show La Red de Radio Red, hosted by Sergio Sarmiento.

Its lead single "Beg" preceded the album's release but was not as successful as its second single "Go Away" which impacted on number 31 on Exa Radio Independent Charts in Ponte Al Aire. The third and last single or the album was "Killing Their Voices", which had an animated music video.

In support of the album, Mann performed at various events since its release. At the start of May 2008, Mann embarked on his debut headlining concert tour Reality Tour, both in Mexico and Canada. Real is currently sold out and only available online.

Acoustics Logistics and Mann's Journal (2009-2010)

Mann's second album Acoustics Logistics was released on April, 2009. It was produced by Nurivan Reyes and Hector Adrian. The lead single, "Sol" was released on March, 2009 and peaked at number 11 in the Independent charts shortly after its release. In 2010 Mann released his most successful single to date "Olvidado", which debuted on number 7 and reached the first position of the independent charts only a week after its release. Heavy media coverage followed Mann's success placing him as a successful Mexican from Canada. Radio Mexiquense praised the song and referred to him as "one of the most promising independent artists from Mexico."

Mann toured on the Acoustically Logistic Tour during 2009 and 2010 in Mexico and Canada.

In 2010, Mi Casa Broadcasting aired Mann's web-based reality series Mann's Journal as one of the first shows after the channel was launched. The first season aired during the beginning of 2010.

Ecstasy and Lava (2011-Present)

Mann co-wrote the material for his third studio album Ecstasy, along with Nurivan Reyes, who co-produced the album with Donaldo Sevilla from Doble Circulación. The album was released on January, 26, 2011 leaded by the single "Lights". The song lacked to chart, but got heavy rotation in Mexican nightclubs. Mann announced as the second single "The Sun Goes Down, The Moon Will Rise", which was included in Catharsis, a collection of best of indie music in Mexico.

In October, 26, 2011, Mann released a new song "From The Start", produced by Canadian Producer Murray Yates, recorded in Echoman Studios. The song earned Mann the third position on Reverbnation Vancouver Latin Charts and the sixth position nationally on the Canadian version of the site. Mann performed the song live in Mexican morning talk-show Televanta and Puebla's television show El Fusil. He promoted the track in several radio stations in central Mexico and confirmed he was working with Yates in a new album.

In April, 2012, Mann stated that the new release would be an EP and in June, 2012 he announced that the name of the Extended Play was Lava.
